I don’t know about you, but I spend many of my days on the gerbil wheel of life. It sometimes feels like a perpetual state of zombieism; getting things done so you can go to bed, to get up and get more things done. Between work, running errands, keeping our houses in order, keeping up with friends and family, it is easy to feel like there is not enough time in the day for anything else. Add into the mix that we are expected to share each and every little component of our days on social media and suddenly, the pressure is on.
We live in a constant state of busy. Life has a way of moving at the light of speed or at least social media! Everything we do has to be interesting, unique, shareable, likeable, worthy of a reasonable amount of comments and completely illustrate us as a person.

Life has become loud, and if it’s not noisy, we view it as mundane. Disruptive use to be something we had to work through, but now it’s how people want to live their lives
I feel like we are so busy with trying to keep up it’s easy to lose track of things, especially the small stuff.
Life has become loud, and if it’s not noisy, we view it as mundane. Disruptive use to be something we had to work through, but now it’s how people want to live their lives. So it’s no wonder the small stuff fades into the background. Those small things, the things that make our lives and relationships truly unique, are not the stuff that viral social media posts are made of. Those things take precious time to cultivate and after a long, loud day it can be hard to find the energy or the motivation to do the things that truly make us happy. We turn on the TV and see people living loud, exuberant lives and even if they are behaving badly, they are celebrated for the behaviour. We are led to believe that our small little lives are boring and if we aren’t fighting, screaming, spending a king’s ransom on stuff, travelling to exotic places or hanging out with “beautiful people” well, we suck! And have a less-than life.
It’s great entertainment and at times the “fantasy of reality” beats the hell out of the real stuff happening in the world. But, I think it anesthetizes us and makes us feel like if it isn’t big, loud or disruptive it doesn’t matter.

Allowing yourself a moment to step back, breathe and appreciate what you have, love and enjoy instead of dwelling on what you don’t have or like makes life a bit easier and more enjoyable
It’s
easy to lose track of the things that make us happy, because let’s face
it, most of the time we feel like we are just going through the
motions. Allowing yourself a moment to step back, breathe and appreciate
what you have, love and enjoy instead of dwelling on what you don’t
have or like makes life a bit easier and more enjoyable. Most of us
can’t afford either financially or timewise to do what we want to do (or
think we want to do) so let’s utilize what we have and start small.
Take a minute and look at your typical routine. Where are you spending
the most of your spare time? Scrolling through your social media feed?
Binge watching Netflix? Getting sucked into group gossip texts? Do any
of those activities really make you happy? If not, add up the amount of
time you spend on them throughout the day and see if you can schedule
something else in that time slot.
Maybe, just maybe, by appreciating what’s already within our reach and living our lives instead of envying and comparing it to other people’s, we will still be on the wheel, but it will move a bit slower, so we can all enjoy the ride.
