How to Get a Great Haircutâ ”Tabatha Tells All (Jan 26, 2011)

Bravo reality star Tabatha Coffey had what you might call an unconventional childhood. In her new book, It's Not Really About the Hair, she describes spending time in the strip clubs her parents owned in Australia. She grew up watching the women-and a fair number of transsexual men-put on the wigs, sequins, and makeup they wore on stage.

"That experience helped fuel my conviction that you must always be true to yourself," she says. "It also got the passion for hair and glamour going. They were good lessons." Coffey went on to work as a hair stylist in Australia, England, and the United States, to compete on Bravo's first season of Shear Genius, and to star in her own show, Tabatha's Salon Takeover. She's seen the best and the worst stylists at work, so we asked for her advice on how to avoid a bad salon experience.

Give it a once over. A salon should be clean when you first walk in. "There shouldn't be hair balls on the floor and shampoo bottles covered in dust," says Coffey. "That tells me they don't care about their environment." And everyone should be working, even if the salon isn't busy. "There is always something to do," she says. "People shouldn't be sitting around checking their phones. That's a sign something isn't right."

Make sure they listen. "The consultation is the most important part of a haircut," says Coffey. "I don't care if I've cut your hair 100 times, I'm still going to talk to you, touch your hair, find out what you want." If you sense your stylist isn't listening-he doesn't ask follow-up questions, for instance, or his attention has clearly wondered to another client-politely repeat yourself until you're sure he's heard you.

Take a break. "A salon should have a social atmosphere," says Coffey. "But in a well-run place, the stylists and assistants shouldn't be talking about what they did last night or how much they drank. They should be talking to you." And if you don't want to chat? "It's absolutely fine to say 'I've had a long day and this is my downtime' or 'I have to catch up on some work.'"

Know yourself. Do you know you don't like it when your hair is cut with a razor or texturizing shears? Then stand your ground when a stylist claims he's an absolute expert in the technique and you won't believe how amazing you'll look. "If someone wants to use a technique on your hair that hasn't worked for you in the past, you need to tell them that," says Coffey. "That's not rude."

Conócete a ti mismo.

Make them fix it. It's not a fluke when you leave a salon happy: you've just had a professional blow-out, and unless the cut is a disaster, you probably look great. But what about the next day, or a few days later, when you realize the cut isn't right? "Calling within the week to say a cut isn't working is totally acceptable," says Coffey. Your stylist should invite you in to fix it-for free. "Just make sure you aren't having a bad reaction to something new. Sometimes it can take a few days to get used to a new style."

Tabatha's Take-No-Prisoners Guide to Business Culture ( May 24, 2012)

If you don't like the atmosphere at your business, a recent episode of Tabatha's Salon Takeover offers a primer on how to turn it around. If you don't know the Bravo reality show's star, Tabatha Coffey, she's an edgy, black-clad, white-blonde, brutally frank Aussie salon-business consultant who overhauls failing shops.

People kept telling me to check out this show, and I'm glad I did. Coffey puts the reality in reality TV. She doesn't care whose feathers get ruffled if she can fix a dying business. In the episode I caught, she arrives at Earth Moon Sun, a salon in upscale Western Springs, Ill, that's fallen $500,000 in debt. Owner Janeen Nufer has floundered since her sister and business partner, who led the hairstylist team, left her flat.

Since then, the atmosphere devolved radically. Employees and managers shout across the salon and berate each other. Workers eat while talking on the phone to customers, belch at the front desk, and drink on the job. Unsurprisingly, customers come in. . . but they don't come back.

Here's how Coffey turned around this sorry scenario and helped instill a culture of professionalism and respect:

Document the problem. Before arriving at the salon, Coffey spent a day taping the workers on hidden camera, and sent in secret-shopper customers who came back unhappy with their haircuts. Confronted with the evidence of the problems in the salon, Nufer was receptive to new ideas to turn things around.

Get over the past. Nufer hadn't moved on after her sister left the business. She'd never hired a new hairstyling manager, leaving the salon floundering artistically and in terms of training. Coffey takes Nufer to the beach to scream and vent her anger and sadness over this betrayal. Then, it's time to move forward.

Freshen up. If your place of business looks grotty, it's easy for civility to go out the window. A quick facelift that adds warmer colors and a few new furniture pieces have workers instantly feeling happier to show up to the salon.

Renueva.

Get out from behind the desk. Nufer's general manager, Nicole, is a big problem that Coffey identifies immediately. She's not really managing the employees or making sure customers' needs are met, preferring to hide in the back office doing paperwork while everything goes to heck. Coffey pulls her on to the salon floor and tries to get her involved in operations, but Nicole isn't interested.

Take a break. At one point, Coffee sends workers home for a couple of days to think about how they've been acting and to learn new skills. The break from the work grind gives everyone a chance to reflect on how they could change their behavior.

Boost training. One haircutter is a disaster, unconfident and unresponsive to customer's feedback. With Coffey's encouragement, the employee is moved to an assistant position and off the haircutting floor, then signed up for more training to improve her skills.

Model the behavior you want. Coffey has Nufer lead the staff in rounding up all the liquor and pouring it out. When they go out to cut hair for a fashion show, Coffey cautions her to set the tone by making sure she's polite and talks softly to staff. Employees immediately pick up on the vibe.

Have the guts to cut the deadwood. Every worker in the salon hates Nicole, and Coffey feels Nufer is in a co-dependent relationship with her manager. At one point, Nicole even cuts off all Nufer's sentences and finishes them for her. A few weeks after Coffey departs, Nufer finally musters the courage to get rid of her.

Coffey is a rock star in the salon world. Haircutters about fall down when she walks in. This helps with Coffey's shock-and-awe approach to revamping the business.

Bravo's so happy with the show it morphed it into Tabatha Takes Over for season four, in which Coffey fixes all types of businesses. Makes sense to me, since her back-to-basics business advice is equally relevant to any business with employees. As her memoir says, It's Not Really About the Hair.

Tabatha Coffey Talks Style and Success at Barnes & Noble at Rowan University (June 9, 2014)

Tabatha Coffey and her new book, Own It: Be the Boss of Your Life — at Home and in the Workplace, have a few traits in common: They open up easily, they’ve got edge, and you know a whole lot more after an encounter with them.

Perhaps that’s why more than 100 customers lined up at the Barnes & Noble at Rowan University bookstore to greet the Australia-born icon, who took the store by storm with her chic platinum pixie and trademark black stilettos. “She’s a great guest,” says John Styles, manager of the store in Glassboro, New Jersey, which has been under Barnes & Noble College’s management since 2008. “She’s very engaging and jumps right in, taking questions, signing books, and posing for photos. We loved having her here — and so do our customers.”

Straight-Shooting Approach

Drawing on her years of hands-on experience as a hairstylist, as well as her business savvy and straight-shooting approach, Coffey travels the country helping struggling business owners turn around their lives and businesses on the fifth season of Bravo TV’s Tabatha Takes Over. During her bookstore appearance, Coffey fielded questions about hair, from products to problems, but she also entertained inquiries about handling business and professional challenges, including hiring and firing employees and having difficult conversations. “I love how blunt Tabatha is and how she doesn’t sugar-coat her comments,” reports Tori Converse, a graduating senior at Rowan University and student bookseller at the store. “I was pleasantly surprised at how nice and friendly she was, too, especially in light of her sometimes tough TV persona.”

Enfoque Directo Shooting

Community Superstore

Coffey’s visit was the second to the bookstore, drawing a crowd nearly two years ago — and inspiring the staff to dress in her trademark all-black, all-chic wardrobe in tribute. At that time, the bookstore had just moved into its new space on Rowan Boulevard, part of a $300 million revitalization project developed in public/private partnership between the Borough of Glassboro, private developers, and Rowan University. The 36,000-square-foot Barnes & Noble superstore and Starbucks Café now serves the students and faculty of Rowan University as well as attracting a following from outside the college community with its easy parking and access from the major thoroughfare.

“We may be a college superstore, but we offer quite a bit for the entire community,” says Styles. “We offer children’s events, such as arts and crafts, book readings, and a summer reading program as well.” The bookstore frequently hosts high-profile authors, including comedian Bill Cosby, football player Gary Brackett, and Jersey Shore’s Snooki.

Coffey, the most recent celebrity author, stayed after the crowd left to answer a few more questions from the staff. “I asked her how best to shampoo my type of hair [use tepid water and conditioner from the ears down only], and what’s my best hair color [lighter chestnut],” recalls Michelle Falcone, a graduating senior at Rowan University studying education, who snapped photos of customers with Coffey. “I watch her show with my mom and sister, so it was really exciting to meet her in person. It was a great event.”

Retail Decor tips from the star of "Tabatha Takes Over" (2/2 Parte)

Entrepreneur: How can making over the environment make a difference in the business?

Coffey: When a business looks tired and run down, it shows complacency and that tells a customer that you not only don't care about the environment, you don't care about them. Customers want to be invited into a business and be invited to open their wallets. Change is invigorating, and it shows that you are current and that you care.

Entrepreneur: How can business owners objectively evaluate what's working and what needs to change?

Coffey: Don't become anesthetized to your own business, and don't wait until you start losing customers to look at what is going on. It is essential to walk into your business "for the first time"at least once a month. Try to experience the environment for the first time, try the product you are selling, and experience what a customer experiences.

Is the store inviting? Is the product or service up to par? Is the layout cohesive and marketed in the right way to represent what you are selling? Is the product visible and accessible to customers?

A lot of owners have a difficult time being objective, so I recommend getting feedback from trusted customers and staff, too, because the people that frequent your business or work there daily will be able to give valuable information. Just ask them. It's also important to see what competitors are doing to see how you stack up, but you shouldn't copy them. I believe in seeing what they are doing well and not well, and always striving to be better.

Entrepreneur: Are there solutions for businesses that need to reinvent their environments, but may be struggling to afford a full renovation or makeover?

Coffey: Yes. All it takes is a bucket and a brush and elbow grease to make a place clean, tidy and fresh. A fresh coat of paint can always help to brighten up a space and make it look fresh. Adding accent colors and small touches can be easy and affordable. Changing out light bulbs to be brighter or a different tone can make a huge difference to brighten up a space or retail area. Try moving around product shelves so they're more accessible or visible. Adding fresh flowers makes almost any place more inviting. These things don't cost a lot of money and are easy ways to make over a business

Entrepreneur: How do you get employees interested in reinventing the business environment?

Coffey: Employees need to be invested in a business. They need to believe that when the business is successful, they are successful. The owner needs to lead by example, show excitement and passion for the work, share a vision, and acknowledges the hard work of staff. Those things will help to keep the staff vested in the process.

This is especially important in businesses that are creative enterprises such as salons and restaurants. However, even if you are selling widgets, your team needs to be invested in that product. An employee who is just punching a clock will not make your business successful. Communicate expectations, enforce standards and reward exemplary work.

During those 10 years, she built a well-respected salon, managing employees and customers while also traveling and working as an educator and editorial stylist.

She recently took a break from shooting her show and promoting her memoir, It's Not Really About the Hair: The Honest Truth about Life, Love and the Business of Beauty, (HarperCollins/It Books, 2011) to talk to Entrepreneur.com about creating a successful retail environment.

Entrepreneur: How do you create a space that makes customers want to come back?

Tabatha Coffey: Retailers, especially small businesses and startups, need to distinguish themselves by giving customers something they don't get at competitors. The right music and lighting, as well as a clean, touchable and inviting shopping environment, are important. Also, having staff who are well-versed on the products or services you are providing. Go the extra mile -- even offering your customers refreshments to make them more comfortable and happy.

Entrepreneur: What are the most frequent mistakes you find business owners make when it comes to their retail environments?

Coffey: Cleanliness, cleanliness, cleanliness. It doesn't matter what kind of business you have, it needs to be clean and tidy. And that includes making sure it is organized and uncluttered -- even the areas you think a customer can't see.

I was in my bank the other day and the manager opened his desk drawer and all kinds of mess and clutter came tumbling out. How am I supposed to trust him with my accounts when he can't even find what he's looking for in his drawer?

I also find a lot of owners become so overwhelmed at how to improve their businesses that they do nothing. As soon as employees see this kind of behavior, it gives them permission to do nothing also.

Coffey: Limpieza, limpieza, limpieza.
