The BFTV Interview: Tabatha Coffey (april 30, 2014)

Tabatha Coffey is one of today’s strongest businesswomen. Starting as a talented hairstylist, she built a personal brand as a business owner and later TV personality, most notably through her hit Bravo series Tabatha Takes Over. Now those not lucky enough to be the recipient of one of her takeovers can reap the benefits of Tabatha’s advice through her second book, Own It! BFTV connected with Tabatha last week to discuss the making of the book and what she wants you to take away from it.

“The process for me, it’s a great process and it’s really difficult, because everything I do, I take it really seriously,” she told us. “This one was probably a little harder because the first book was part memoir. This one, while there are personal stories in there as well, I wanted people to get great advice from it. Wherever you are in your career or in your life, you can get something out of a chapter or the whole book.”

In Own It!, Tabatha covers everything from personal relationships, to finding the balance between your career and your home life, to dealing with problematic colleagues. Her advice isn’t just limited to the hairstyling world or things she’s covered on her TV show. While she delivers insight with the same straightforward approach you’ve seen on Tabatha Takes Over, she addresses challenges that anyone can relate to. There’s even an “Ask Tabatha” appendix where she answers specific queries that have been posed to her over the years. The book reads like a comprehensive consultation with Tabatha, only in print form.

Own it!

Given who we’re talking about, we shouldn’t have to say this, but we will anyway: this isn’t another celebrity self-help book thrown together for the purpose of profit. Tabatha stands behind everything you’ll read. “It really is personal for me. It’s what I really believe in,” she said. “I talk [about] in the book that I don’t look back, I look forward. Even the mistakes that you’ve made, you can learn from. I do believe there’s a reason we do things at that point in time. You learn from that mistake.”

Own It! is the latest project on an already impressive resume for Tabatha. Aside from her own work in the hairstyling industry, she’s contributed to People and been a red carpet correspondent for the Academy Awards and Grammys. Her first book, It’s Not Really About The Hair, is in its fourth printing. Then there’s her TV show, which has assisted countless small businesses from salons to a Mexican restaurant. She’s worked hard not just to do well by herself, but to help others as well, and she does it all with class and refreshingly blunt honesty.

So what’s Tabatha up to right now? “I’m busy at the moment!” she explained. “Obviously the book is my main focus, and I also have a wig and hairpiece line that I’m working on. That’s keeping me really busy. And I also do a lot of speaking engagements.” Her future stops include her native Australia and Italy; you can check out where Tabatha will be next at any given time by visiting the Events page on her website.

She’s crafted an outstanding career, so we asked Tabatha to tell us about the people who have impressed her over the years. “My mother, and I write about it in the book. She was a big influence on me. And the older I got, I was impressed with the kind of businesswoman she was and that she was a single parent,” she said.

“I thought Steve Jobs was amazing. He was such a great businessman. Someone that has just been really continually successful with their brand and hasn’t gone away, Madonna is incredible. We’ve all kind of listened to her for years and seen her grow up and change and she’s never strayed away from who she is.

“I also find inspiration in everyday people,” she added. “Just when people open up and share their personal stories with me, and tell me about the things that they’re going through, that’s always inspiring.”

And that goes back to why she wrote Own It! Tabatha’s continuing to pass on the benefits of her experience to others. “My biggest thing with this book is that I have such great people that support me. For me, writing books like this, it really is personal,” she told us, saying she takes into account all the personal emails she’s sent and questions she’s asked by fans. “All of those are in mind and stored for me. I really hope that I answer them, and I hope that people know that I really appreciate their support.”
