The softer side of Tabatha Coffey

Although Tabatha Coffey got her start as a contestant on Bravo’s reality show, Shear Genius, it quickly became clear that she was ready to take over. The hairstylist, salon owner and reality star’s approach isn’t just to style hair but to offer her client a complete personal transformation. A whole new look can give a person brand new energy, attitude and perspective, which is the premise of her book, It's Not Really About the Hair: The Honest Truth About Life, Love, and the Business of Beauty.

She is currently enjoying the success of her own show, Tabatha Takes Over, turning suffering salons into thriving businesses, but Tabatha’s services don’t stop there. Now in the 5th season of the hit show, the self-described "B.I.T.C.H.", hopes that her growing fan base can start to see the softer, 3-Dimensional side of her.

In my interview with Coffey, I discussed with her how her multi-media empire began (including co-hosting The Talk on August 9th) and what she says is one of the most important parts of her life and career.

I love Tabatha Takes Over. I watch any moment I can. How did the show come together from the beginning?

I was on the show Shear Genius, which was a competitive hairdressing show that Bravo had. When the show finished, I got a phone call from Bravo asking me if I would go and meet with them at their New York offices, and they asked me if I'd be interested in doing the show.

I was watching an episode last night that was on the E! Channel and I thought to myself, who's scarier, Tabatha or that particular dog groomer? How do you think that you come across on the show compared to how you really are in real life?

You know, honestly I'm the same person. I think the difference is that when people watch me on the show, which is really their only encounter with me most of the time, they see me walking in, and I'm walking into situations that aren't great because these businesses are in trouble and the stakes are high, and they see me incredibly serious and intent and, I guess, a tad intimidating. People have gotten to know me now, so they know that I'm going to call them out on anything that they're doing wrong and any bad behavior that's going on. That person that you see on TV is definitely me; I mean, that's how I look at things in my business, with that kind of clarity and focus. Sometimes if I go out and I have a really bad experience in a restaurant or a coffee shop or a clothing store or anywhere else, I kind of have the same intensity; it's just that you're seeing one part of me on TV, which is that very serious, business Tabatha, and obviously we're all 3-dimensional. There are many other parts to me.

Yo estaba viendo un episodio de anoche que estaba en el E! Canal y me dije a mí mismo, que es más aterrador, Tabatha o la peluquera de perros en particular? ¿Cómo crees que te encuentras en el programa en comparación con lo que realmente son en la vida real?

 
Ya sabes, honestamente, soy la misma persona. Creo que la diferencia es que cuando la gente me mira en el programa, que es en realidad su único encuentro conmigo la mayor parte del tiempo, me ven caminar, y estoy entrando en situaciones que no son grandes porque estas empresas están en problemas y hay mucho en juego, y me ven muy serio y atento y, supongo, un poco intimidante. La gente ha llegado a conocerme ahora, para que sepan que voy a llamar a cabo en todo lo que están haciendo mal y cualquier mala conducta que está pasando. Esa persona que se ve en la televisión es, sin duda me, quiero decir, así es como veo las cosas en mi negocio, con ese tipo de claridad y precisión. A veces, si salgo y tengo una muy mala experiencia en un restaurante o una cafetería o una tienda de ropa o en cualquier otro lugar, como que tienen la misma intensidad, es sólo que usted está viendo una parte de mí en la televisión, lo que es que muy grave, Tabatha negocio, y obviamente estamos todos de 3 dimensiones. Hay muchos otros lugares para mí.

I was just telling a friend of mine a couple of days ago that I really wish you'd come here to Costa Rica because you would have a field day at these restaurants. I've counted at least 9 or 10 times when I've found long hairs in my food from the restaurants here. I mean, the things that happen here would just blow your mind.

I'm sure. But you know what? That's everywhere. I think it's interesting that one of the things that everyone enjoys about the show and seems to resonate with them is that we've all experienced really bad service, and sometimes our mind is blown by it. We're expecting some kind of experience, whether it's going out for dinner or going and getting a haircut or getting your dog groomed or going and having a drink - it doesn't matter…you know, we've all had really bad service and we've all had really great service, and we know the difference. I think that's something that when people watch the show it really resonates with them because we can all understand what's going on at that time because we've experienced it on some level. 

Le decía a un amigo mío hace un par de días que me gustaría que vinieras aquí a Costa Rica, ya que tendría un día de campo en estos restaurantes. He contado al menos 9 o 10 veces cuando me he encontrado largos pelos en mi comida de los restaurantes aquí. Quiero decir, las cosas que suceden aquí acaban de volar tu mente.

Estoy seguro. Pero ¿sabes qué? Eso es en todas partes. Creo que es interesante que una de las cosas que todo el mundo disfruta de la feria y parece resonar con ellos es que todos hemos experimentado muy mal servicio, y, a veces nuestra mente está quemado por el mismo. Estamos esperando algún tipo de experiencia, ya sea para salir a cenar o ir y conseguir un corte de pelo o conseguir su perro preparado o de ir y tomar una copa - no importa ... ya sabes, todos hemos tenido muy mal servicio y todos hemos tenido un gran servicio, y conocemos la diferencia. Creo que eso es algo que cuando la gente ve el espectáculo que realmente resuena con ellos porque todos podemos entender lo que está pasando en ese momento, porque lo hemos experimentado en algún nivel. 

Whenever you are invited to dinner parties at your friends' houses, are people a little bit more on their game?

No. Honestly, I think my friends just know that I'm [being] me, and they know that if I love something I'm going to rave about it, and if I don't love it I will not say anything about it or I will tell them I don't enjoy it. I definitely at times notice a difference in service when I go out. You know, I can walk in to grab a cup of coffee or walk in to have lunch or dinner, and people definitely seem on their best behavior, which is funny, or I start to see people clean up around me, which I always find really, really amusing. 

Cada vez que usted está invitado a cenas en las casas de sus amigos, son personas un poco más en su juego?

 
No. Sinceramente, creo que mis amigos sólo saben que soy [ser] mí, y sé que si yo quiero algo que voy a hablar sobre ello, y si no me gusta, no voy a decir nada al respecto o voy a decirles que no lo disfruto. Sin duda, a veces noto una diferencia en el servicio cuando salgo. Ya sabes, puedo caminar en tomar una taza de café o caminar para almorzar o cenar, y la gente definitivamente parece en su mejor comportamiento, que es divertido, o me pongo a ver a la gente a limpiar alrededor de mí, que siempre me pareció muy, muy divertido.

It's funny, I was watching a few episodes recently, and I really love when I see the softer side of Tabatha. That's just really refreshing to see. Are we going to see more of that in other episodes?

Look, I hope so. It's something that I think as everyone has gotten to know me better during five seasons of the show; they've gotten to see that there are different sides to me. One thing that I think people are starting to understand is every business I walk into, I really do care about the outcome and I really do care about the owners and the staffs and have hopes for them to turn their businesses around, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The majority of the time, thankfully, it really does work. I think the thing that people don't know is I stay in contact with a lot of these owners, and especially during three seasons just in hairdressing salons...it's like any other community; it's a very small community. Our paths cross a lot. I'm very active within the hairdressing community and go to a lot of hair shows and different events, so I run into a lot of the owners from season 1 all the way through to season 5. A lot of them reach out to me still and ask me for advice if something comes up along the way, or I call and check in with them, so I'm really vested in these businesses and I really want the best for them. Nothing makes me happier than to hear the success stories that they have of how they've really turned their businesses, and sometimes their lives, around.

Es curioso, yo estaba viendo algunos episodios poco, y me encanta cuando veo el lado más suave de Tabatha. Es realmente refrescante ver. ¿Vamos a ver más de eso en otros episodios?

Mira, eso espero. Es algo que creo que como todo el mundo ha llegado a conocerme mejor durante cinco temporadas de la serie, sino que han llegado a ver que hay diferentes lados de mí. Una cosa que creo que la gente está empezando a entender es toda empresa que entro en, de verdad se preocupan por el resultado y que realmente se preocupan por los propietarios y el personal y tienen la esperanza de que se vuelvan sus negocios alrededor, ya veces funciona ya veces no lo hace. La mayoría de las veces, por suerte, lo que realmente funciona. Creo que lo que la gente no sabe es que me alojo en contacto con muchos de estos propietarios, y especialmente durante tres temporadas sólo en peluquerías ... es como cualquier otra comunidad, es una comunidad muy pequeña. Nuestros caminos se cruzan mucho. Soy muy activo dentro de la comunidad de peluquería y voy a un montón de conciertos de pelo y diferentes eventos, por lo que me encuentro con muchos de los propietarios de la temporada 1 hasta el final de la temporada 5. Muchos de ellos llegan a mí y todavía me piden consejo, si surge algo en el camino, o lo llamo y el registro con ellos, así que estoy muy personal en este tipo de empresas y realmente quiero lo mejor para ellos. Nada me hace más feliz que escuchar las historias de éxito que tienen de cómo han realmente volvieron sus negocios, ya veces su vida, alrededor.  

It seems the LGBT community absolutely loves and embraces you. Can we talk a little bit about that aspect of your fan base and why you think that that community in particular really connects to you?
Sure. Hopefully the reason the community [connects] to me is because I'm part of the community as well. I think, especially given younger people and some of the struggles that the younger LGBT community have gone through, I think it's always good to have…I don't think I'm a role model, but I think it's good for people to see people that are out and comfortable and confident and not afraid to talk about them being out and being part of the community, so I think that's always a really good thing. I'm really proud that the LGBT community has gotten behind me because, as I said, I am part of the community, so I do as much as I possibly can for our community and for our rights, so it's nice that everyone is supporting me as well.

Al parecer, la comunidad LGBT absolutamente ama y te abraza. ¿Podemos hablar un poco acerca de ese aspecto de su base de fans y por qué crees que esa comunidad en particular, realmente se conecta a ti?Claro. Esperemos que la razón por la comunidad [conecta] para mí porque soy parte de la comunidad. Creo que, especialmente teniendo en cuenta los más jóvenes y algunas de las luchas que la comunidad LGBT más joven ha tenido que pasar, creo que siempre es bueno tener ... Yo no creo que soy un modelo a seguir, pero creo que es bueno que la gente vea las personas que están fuera y cómodo y seguro y no tiene miedo de hablar de ellos de estar fuera y ser parte de la comunidad, por lo que creo que siempre es una cosa muy buena. Estoy muy orgulloso de que la comunidad LGBT ha conseguido detrás de mí, porque, como he dicho, yo soy parte de la comunidad, por lo que hago tanto como me sea posible para nuestra comunidad y para nuestros derechos, así que es bueno que todo el mundo está apoyando yo también.

What kind of things do you do to help support the community, besides just being yourself?
I'm really active on social media, and I have so many young gay people just reach out to me and talk about coming out and thanking me for either just being someone that is kind of strong and confident on my show, but also reading some of the things that I wrote about in my book. I have no problem talking about being out, talking about being in a long-term relationship, whenever I can. I was just at Gay Pride in San Francisco; I was one of the grand marshals there, which was an amazing experience given the laws that were passed in California that we now can marry, so that was amazing to be there on such an historic weekend for Gay Pride. I'm actually going back to San Francisco this weekend to participate in the AIDS walk. So, really, anything I can do that I think helps our community and puts a positive light on it. When you're someone in the media, the good thing is, I guess, that you can reach a lot of people. Sometimes people are surprised because if they're not part of the community or if they don't necessarily know a lot about the community or they have preconceived notions, which are what people always have, it can help break down stereotypes when they see different faces within a community, and that is a really good thing. It opens up conversation, and it can help change people's minds, and I think that's a good thing.

¿Qué tipo de cosas hace usted para ayudar a apoyar a la comunidad, además de simplemente ser uno mismo?Estoy muy activa en las redes sociales, y tengo muchos gays jóvenes sólo alcanzan a mí y hablar de salir y darme las gracias por tanto simplemente ser alguien que es un poco fuerte y confiado en mi programa, sino también la lectura de algunos de las cosas que he escrito en mi libro. No tengo problema en hablar de estar fuera, hablando de estar en una relación a largo plazo, siempre que puedo. Yo estaba en el Orgullo Gay en San Francisco, que era uno de los grandes mariscales de allí, lo que fue una experiencia increíble teniendo en cuenta las leyes que se aprobaron en California que ahora podemos casar, así que fue increíble estar allí en un fin de semana tan histórico para el orgullo gay. De hecho voy de regreso a San Francisco este fin de semana para participar en la caminata del SIDA. Así que, realmente, cualquier cosa que pueda hacer que creo que ayuda a nuestra comunidad y pone una luz positiva sobre el mismo. One of the things I love is that you're doing the speaking tour, an Evening with Tabatha Coffey, which I wish you would come here and do. What inspired you to do a speaking tour?
Honestly, just everyone reaching out to me. Again, I have so many people reach out to me via social media and writing me emails, sending me tweets or Face book posts and asking me questions. The questions range from, "How do you get started in business?" and "How do you start your own business?" not specifically in the hairdressing industry, just in general. "How do you stay motivated? " "How do you stand up for yourself? " "How do you come out?" The questions really kind of run the gamut to me, and by doing the speaking tour it's a way of, again, showing the people that support me a different side of me and be able to go out and address some of the questions that they have for me, whether they put them through social media or I can actually address them in person - because we have a long Q&A when I do the speaking tour - and really just talk about kind of what drives me and why I am the way I am. I typically start off and introduce myself and tell everyone that everyone knows me as the b**** on TV and I'm okay with that, and tell everyone the reason why is because I came up with an acronym for B.I.T.C.H., which is Brave, Intelligent, Tenacious, Creative, and Honest; and I think if everyone applies my acronym for the word, it takes out the negativity, and it just means that you're someone that is driven and ambitious and doesn't mind standing up for yourself and your convictions and you have integrity and you are honest, and that's okay. That's not a bad thing. They're good qualities to have.

Your LuxHair line sounds like more than just a product line; it really sounds like it's something that's going to help a lot of people who have lost their hair because of illness and what not. Can you tell me a little bit about that?
Yeah, I'm really proud of it. It was something that just…standing behind the chair being a hairdresser for a long time and having so many women - because women aren't as open talking about the situation of hair loss and thinning as men are. There is a different stigma kind of attached to it from women. So many times a woman would come in and be experiencing hair loss or have hair conditions like alopecia or trichomonas, different things like that, and I really couldn't help them. I could try and mask the problem as much as I could or work around it, but I really couldn't solve the problem. It's something that so many suffer with, so I wanted to do a line of extensions and wigs that, yes, if people wanted to change their hair and it's vanity reasons, hey, we're all vain and I'm all about that, so I love that people feel comfortable enough now to be able to throw on a wig and change their hair color or go from long hair to short hair and just kind of try it out and change their persona for a day or a week or whatever; but it's also great, and I'm very proud of the fact that if you are going through extreme hair loss or you are going through chemo that there are great wigs that are affordable available to you, and the same with my different extensions that I've put in the line. It's great if you're someone that just wants a little bit more oomph to your hair for a special occasion or you just want a little bit more hair, then you can definitely use the pieces for that; but if you're someone that's really suffering from hair loss as the over I think it's 2.5 million American women are, it's great that you have a solution to be able to put these extensions on and to be able to mask, again, the hair loss or thinning or any of those things that you have happening and feel beautiful and pretty.

Su línea LuxHair suena como algo más que una línea de productos, sino que realmente suena como que es algo que va a ayudar a muchas personas que han perdido su cabello debido a una enfermedad y lo que no. ¿Puedes contarnos un poco sobre eso?Sí, estoy muy orgulloso de ello.
