Tabatha kicks off season five when she visits the up and coming area of East Nashville, Tennessee where celebrity stylist Tanzy Clark Wright’s salon Mogulz is in a tizzy. Although Tanzy has been a pillar of her African-American COMMUNITY for years, she has struggled to evolve her business to attract the diverse clientele that now inhabit the booming area. Not only has the salon fallen out of touch with the COMMUNITY, the pregnant shopaholic Tanzy has lost her drive, her money and control of her staff. To save Tanzy’s salon, Tabatha must get her to step up, be responsible and lead her and her staff to embrace the diverse wave of the future.

A lot of people think about protecting their skin and not their hair during the summer.  Summer can play real havoc on the health of your hair and scalp.  You can get an incredibly bad sunburn on the scalp.   For all those people paying a lot of money to color their hair, the summer can completely ruin your color.   It can take you until winter to get your hair back to health if you do not pay special attention to it.

OVERWASHING
A lot of people overshampoo their hair in the summer because they feel hot and sweaty as a result of being more active and spending more time outdoors.  What people do not realize is when hair becomes wet; the shaft swells, resulting in hair that is more elastic and easier to break. In addition, shampoos can remove the oils that your hair naturally produces resulting in hair that looks dull and dry.  If you must wash your hair, use the right product so you don't dry the hair out and don't skip the conditioner. The right conditioner smoothes down the cuticle and protects the hair. If you are going to the beach, skip the morning shampoo and use one of the above tips to protect your hair from the elements. If you're working at your job, try a routine of showering at night and only rinsing your hair.

TOWEL DRYING
We obviously have to dry out hair but that vigorous towel drying can be damaging to the hair and make if frizzy as it roughs up the cuticle. For curly haired girls this is extremely important!  I recommend you use paper towels as they are incredibly absorbent. Also, very important... squeeze the hair do not rub. For straight haired ladies again paper towels work great.  Squeeze the moisture out of your hair and always run the towel down to keep the cuticle smooth.

SUN
We protect our skin from the sun and we should do the same for our hair and scalp.  Sun will not only fade our color but the combo of sun, sea and chlorine can make our hair look like straw.  We need to remember that our scalp can get sunburned so make sure you have a product with SPF for your hair and scalp.  I like to use a leave-in treatment or oil that can help keep hair hydrated and protected.  A leave-in treatment can help keep color from fading.  Also, remember if you're in the water a lot you need to reapply the product

HUMIDITY
Humidity isn't going anywhere and curly and textured haired girls experience hair growth while straight haired girls go limp as a result of humidity. Curly haired girls often suffer more as textured hair is lacking in moisture and it loves to suck the moisture out of the air which is what causes the frizz and expansion.  Using the right product for curly girls is a must.  If she is wearing her hair natural, skip the blow dryer and layer the product on. I like hair oil or serum and a leave-in conditioner to keep moisture in the hair and curl under control.  It's also important not to touch your hair too much because that creates frizz. For straight haired ladies, volumizers and surf sprays help to add texture to the hair to help fight the limpness that happens from the weight of the moisture on the hair.  Try sleeking hair back in a great bun or braided ponytail.  Sleek is always chic and a great way to beat the heat.

BRUSHING WET HAIR
Hair is elastic which means it stretches especially when it's wet. Brushing hair can stretch the hair too much and cause breakage when wet and trying to remove tangles.  The solution is to always be gentle with wet hair and use a wide tooth comb.  To remove tangles always start at the ends and work up not the roots down.   This removes tangles more effectively and helps to prevent breakage.

On Sunday, March 28, 2010, the victors claimed their shiny crystal trophies in front of an audience of more than 2,000 salon pros and company VIPs at the hottest party of the year.

TIGI proved to be the big winner of the night, taking home the award for Favorite New Styling Product for Catwalk Thickening Gel Crème, Favorite Volumizing Product for Catwalk Root Boost Spray, Favorite Professional Make-up Line, Favorite Bookstore Award in the Collection Category for Unity and the grand daddy award of the night—Favorite Overall Professional Products Company—for the second year in a row. Another big winner was Mr. Nick Arrojo, who for the second year in a row won the SCA for Favorite Platform Artist. Redken dominated once again in the color categories, snagging trophies for Favorite Permanent and Demi-Permanent Color Lines for Color Fusion and Shades EQ, respectively. Redken Color Extend also took home the win for Favorite Shampoo. PureOlogy Hydrate won big again, tallying wins for Favorite Conditioner, Favorite Prestige Shampoo/Conditioner and Favorite Color Protecting Product. Farouk Systems was the big winner in the tool category, bringing home more wins for Favorite Blow Dryer and Favorite Flat Iron for CHI Turbo and CHI Ceramic. Sebastian snagged wins for Favorite New Shampoo/Conditioner with Volupt and Favorite Styling Product with Whipped Crème. New SCA winners included Scruples Blazing for Favorite Highlightening System and UNITE Haircare for Favorite Small Company.

Everyone agreed that the special live performances were the hits of the night! Anthony Mascolo presented Cirque de TIGI—a lively, colorful, explosive presentation that put Siegfried and Roy to shame. Nick Arrojo got the crowd rockin’ to some Jay Z during his edgy model presentation. Kevin Givens and the TIGI Makeup team’s DOT presentation was like nothing we’ve ever seen before, and Mark Hayes for Sassoon’s dark, graphic performance gave us chills. Ken Paves and the BTC team also presented Mary with a surprise award, thanking her for her many years of devotion to the beauty biz.

It also appears as though you’re wearing 101 Dalmatians.

On a positive note, I do love the simple and chic hairstyling. Your bold middle part and California-cool hair color is quite flattering for your face shape and complexion. Makeup palette is kept simple and the defined dark eye is perfect for a sultry after-party occasion.

We caught up with Tabatha Coffey, successful hairdresser, salon-owner, the host of Tabatha's Salon Takeover (be careful, it is addictive), and author of the recently released book, It's Not Really About the Hair: The Honest Truth About Life, Love, and the Business of Beauty .

Tell us a bit about your book.

The book is part memoir, part business book, and part self help. I shared stories I've experienced personally, professionally, and privately with readers so they can feel good about themselves, feel empowered, and get tips and tricks along the way.

 I've read that you often get called a bitch, but you say your approach is simply about being honest and straightforward. Why does this approach work for you?

Most strong, successful female tend to get labelled a bitch. I'm not a bitch, I'm very honest, and not afraid to say what's on my mind. To me there is no other approach, especially with a business, I need to be honest with myself and my staff about expectations. Evaluation helps people to make themselves better, it's not about telling someone something is wrong and then walking away. It is about telling them it is wrong and how to improve it to make them the best they can be.

If you are choosing a new salon or hair stylist, what should you look for?

Recommendations are great, especially if you admire someone's hair. Another tip is to visit the salon, have a consultation, see if the salon is clean, the kind of work coming out, how the receptionist treats you, and how the stylists look. This will give you an indication of what they do and whether they will teat you well.  

Si usted está eligiendo un nuevo salón o estilista, ¿qué debe tener en cuenta?

1. Ask yourself, are you really passionate about the business you are opening? You have to be.
2. Do your homework: know how much money you need to start up, pay out, keep afloat. This type of fact finding is important.
3. Think about what you want your business to be: the clients, staff, what it will look like, etc... This will give you a clearer picture about the services and products you will provide, the employees you'll bring in, and how you will treat people.

Last question, about the hair style everyone is talking about. What do you think of Kate Middleton's hair?

She's fabulous, I like her style, it is easy and young. I'm a huge fan. Her hair is nice, it suits her and it is fresh, but there's not a lot to it.
