Tabatha's Salon Takeover T2 "Chicago Male"

Absentee owner Scott Neesham has invested his life savings into his salon, Chicago Male, but his “Men’s Only” business model is not attracting enough clientele to keep his business afloat, even in the Boystown area of Chicago. To make matters worse, Neesham is rarely at the salon and has left his business in the hands of an ineffective manager and an unprofessional staff. When Tabatha tries to change his business model, she and Neesham butt heads, but Tabatha drives her point home when she recruits drag queens as hair models for the staff.

When I walked in to Chicago Male they were like gay deer in headlights—in fact, I think I might have scared the gay right out of these boys! It was a good team but they had absolutely no leadership as Scott the owner was never there, and Ric wasn't an effective manager. Scott's 30 minute $30 men's only business model wasn't working especially when the salon was only booked to 25% capacity. The only way a biz can be successful is when you have butts in chairs and Scott was being a little too precious about his strategy. So I had to give him a wake up call.

The fact that Scott wanted to say that the staff eating, texting, gossiping and overall lack of professionalism was due to the laid-back-keep-it-casual-boys-in-boys-town was BS. Let's face it, who demands better service than "The Boys?" It was due to Scott being MIA and the drive thru business model. Scott claimed he wanted to give clients a high end experience but how can a stylist do that when they are rushing to meet the timer? Scott had no understanding of this because he is not a stylist and didn’t spend anytime in his business.

The thing that became clear to me was that all the staff felt that the quality of their work was being sacrificed by doing 30 minute haircuts. Their men’s buzz cuts were even a disaster. Despite the fact that Scott didn’t allow female clients in his business model, all the stylists were all open to doing female clients because they felt it would make them more money, offer better service to everyone in the community and stimulate them creatively. The only one I had a hard time convincing was Scott. I appreciated his idea but as he kept saying he wanted to service his community and improve thef inancial's of his business it made no sense. I think my sit down tough love conversation with him and the trip to Paul Mitchell finally helped him see the light because he really changed.

Everyone in the salon was experienced in doing both male and female clients and they all seemed to enjoy the challenge. The only one that was struggling was Drew and that was due to his lack of experience. A young stylist like Drew needs education and mentoring and Scott was not providing it. Paul Mitchell and my guidance helped Drew realize he needed to stop being babied and built up his confidence. Everyone seemed genuinely changed when I went back to visit. Scott has stepped up and is running his business everyday, Drew is getting education and feeling more confident, and the whole team is doing female clients and taking more than 30 minutes where needed. I am proud of my gay deer for stepping up and turning it around.

Tabatha’s Takeover: Shailene Woodley Got It All Wrong

We all know Tabatha Coffey, Bravo’s sharp-tongued Aussie style pro, from her stint on Shear Genius and her latest hit, Tabatha Takes Over. And now, she’s bringing her talents online, joining us at PEOPLE StyleWatch once weekly to dish on some of the best – and worst – celebrity looks of the week. Keep in mind the opinions below belong solely to the stylist … though she’s probably saying what lots of you are thinking, anyway!

Today, she takes on Shailene Woodley, who got extra cozy for the Sundance premiere of The Spectacular Now this week:

I think someone forget to cc me on the memo that it’s completely okay to show up to your Sundance premiere looking like you’ve been panhandling underneath the Seattle Space Needle for the last two years.

Oh wait, it’s not?

Well then, Shailene Woodley, what’s going on here? Did you forget your class in first class when you flew to Salt Lake City, Utah? Let’s start at the top, shall we?

The Hat: It would be cute if you were going to the mall with your best friend who just got done knitting it in that beginners class at the local yarn shop.

The Coat: It’s just too darn big. You have such a cute, petite figure to let something so big and boxy drape over you. I see you in a wool knee-length Chanel coat, belted at the waist of course.

The Scarf: I swear I saw this once in a Nirvana video circa 1993.

The Pants: Rethink your size. You’re much smaller than that.

Los pantalones: Repensar su tamaño. Usted es mucho más pequeño que eso.

The Shoes: Let me give you a little winter red carpet advice. If you know you’re going to be walking in salty snow then carry a small packet of wipes in your clutch, purse, knapsack or pocket. I don’t care where you put them, but just have them on hand to give shoes a once over before you present yourself in front of a camera. You look like you just got done tap dancing in baby powder.

And don’t give me the excuse it’s cold. I just got back from Finland. We’ll swap “cold” stories if you really want to go there.

Tabatha's Salon Takeover T2 "Refuge"

Miriam Jones opened Refuge Salon in the chic neighborhood of Silverlake because she was not content with her previous employment. Being new to the business, Jones has no idea how to work the books or how to take charge of her stylists, who constantly break the rules. Unfortunately, she is the most unprofessional of them all due to her incessant gossiping about her staff and “too cool” attitude. To save Refuge Salon, Tabatha has to teach these hipsters a thing or two about customer service and force Jones to step up and be a leader. Tabatha is used to renegade stylists with their own agenda, but when faced with a backstabbing owner and stylists who follow this poor example, Tabatha must decide herself whether or not to walk away from this sinking salon.

When I first met Miriam, I was stunned at her lack of attention to the business. She had no idea when bills were overdue, how much she owed, or even how to pay a bill properly. Miriam liked to think of herself and her staff as the cool kids. They work in the hipster neighborhood of Silverlake in LA. But being rock and roll is no excuse for poor management and poor customer service.

Miriam liked to make the excuse that she grew up Amish and had no idea how to take control of her busines, but that to me was BS. Miriam wanted to be friends with her staff and she had no boundaries rules or consequences. The final straw for me was when her manager re-booked one of their clients at someone else's salon. Wow!

Wow!

The challenge of making Miriam take some responsibility for her business was really daunting, especially because she had a daughter to take care of. I have no problem with wanting to cultivate a rocker reputation but it needs to be done professionally, so I decided to hook up Miriam and her staff with a LA band that needed to shoot their CD cover. But she couldn't step up and all she did was gossip and drop the ball. When I stormed out it was the only thing I could do to force Miriam to take a hard look at herself. And amazingly she did. She actually stepped up, apologized, and tried to right the ship.

I still do not understand how anyone can not take advantage of opportunities when they present it. If I were a stylist, and lead me to a photoshoot would give 110 per 100. Not only on this occasion but in all

As someone may be argued that a small wound can not work. And what is most illogical to ask only to serve a person Really......... Although not leave my amazement
