Today: Stay in Style!

THE PRO: Tabatha Coffey, hairstylist, author and host of Bravo's "Tabatha Takes Over"

Hoy: Stay in Style!

Protect Your Hair

Blow-drying may be more of a necessity in winter, but it can also take a toll on your hair, so Coffey suggests using conditioning treatments weekly and going a little heavier than you would during warm weather.

And while thermal appliances may give you that perfect look for holiday parties, they're also hard on your hair, so find a product that will protect your tresses.

Coffey just slicks back her short hair, using conditioner instead of gel so it doesn't get crunchy in the cold air.

"You are actually doing something nice for your hair and giving it a treatment, killing two birds with one stone," Coffey said.

Don't Make Drastic Changes

Limp and dry locks can tempt you into making a big change so you look incredible at holiday gatherings, but Coffey advised against that kind of thinking — at least for now.

"I am not big on changing this time of year," she said. "I like it when people have fun with their hair… but making a commitment to change right now when you have so many other things going on is sometimes setting yourself up for disaster."

Instead, play around with festive accessories or clip-in hairpieces such as those available in Coffey's LUXHAIR line. They're "a great way to test drive that look and see if you like it, and then you can do it in the New Year," she said.

And consider the dramatic styling possibilities offered by extensions and clip-in bangs, which provide instant length, instant volume or a whole new look, with no New Year's regret.

No haga cambios drásticos

Look Good While Traveling

On the road, Coffey turns to dry shampoos to get extra mileage out of a style, as well as volume.

"They are great to throw in your bag, and if you need to get off the plane and go … somewhere, you can spray it through your hair and revitalize it and reenergize your style," she said. And try "working hairsprays," which are effective for gently layering texture.

Top It All Off With a Hat

You may think you have to forgo hats to preserve your style, but they can actually be great at protecting hair as well as providing warmth. And when you take the hat off, your hair will still have body, Coffey said.

Depending on how much room the hat allows, longer hair can be pulled into a ponytail, gathered in a loose bun, gently twisted up and lightly pinned or styled into a topknot.

More Top Tips From Coffey

Control static. For fine hair with static electricity, Coffey recommends using dryer sheets to tame your tresses. Rub it on your hands and then gently smooth your hands over your hair to reduce static.

How to deal with a booked stylist. Forgot to book a hair appointment and now it's impossible to get in? Make an appointment with someone else in the same salon so your regular stylist is still there to oversee things.

And if you decide to try another salon, do some research and get a referral from someone whose hair you love.

"If you are going to see someone else, don't make a rash decision," Coffey said. "You don't want to set yourself up for a cut and color you are not happy with, because you are going to be miserable for the next couple of months and it is going to be too much added pressure with all the other things going on."

Shear Genius: Guest Judge Tabatha Coffey! (Feb 24, 2010)

After Faatemah was eliminated on last week’s episode of Shear Genius on Bravo, the remaining 8 stylists realize that the challenges are only going to get harder. What they don’t realize is they may face their toughest Judge yet, Tabatha Coffey of Tabatha’s Salon Takeover!

For tonight’s shortcut challenge, the stylists must each create a hairstyle inspired by a flower, making it seem like the flowers are actually hair. Since Matthew won the elimination challenge last week, he got to pick his model first for the challenge, and after each stylist chooses a model, the challenge begins. As they each take turns trying to coordinate not only petals from their flowers but also unique colors, Brig again seems to have bitten off more than she can chew and thinks she is going to run out of time, which seems to happen for every challenge.

As their styles are critiqued, Jon is rejected for his choice of purple color, and Janine’s style is called drag queen. Adee beat himself up about about his choice of flower, and realizes his style was no good at all. Brig spent too much time on her design and crashed and burned. Adee and Jon were chosen as the bottom two, while he really liked April and Brian’s styles. THey both had great color choices and unique ideas. Brian is named as the winner, and receives a special advantage in the elimination challenge.

The next day, the stylists receive what seems to be an invitation to a formal event, but is actually paving the way for their next challenge. As they arrive at the venue dressed in their best formal wear, they are introduced to their newest clients, a group of Indian women who are bridesmaids in a special wedding ceremony. They are to change the styles they have done for the wedding to a different style the women can wear to the reception. But just when they think that is all, in walks their guest Judge, Tabatha Coffey! Tabatha is known for being blunt and cutting to the chase, so the stylists must really be on point, not only because of Tabatha but also because this is for an actual wedding.

Brian gets to pair each stylist with their model since he won the last challenge. After each stylist has their model, The work begins. But this challenge is not as easy as it may seem. They only have an hour and a half, and the wedding guests are waiting, but some of the women are not receptive to any change. Brian’s model wants something unique and is open to anything, while Amy’s model was shy and not willing to speak up about what she wanted. Brig’s model questions her every step of the way, and Adee’s model refused any product he wanted to use on her hair. Time seems to always be an issue, and they cut it real close, but the women need to be done on time for the reception.

As th reception begins, the bridesmaids are introduced to the other guests at the wedding, and their styles are revealed to the judges. Each model is asked if they got a style they wanted, and most are happy with the results. But now they must face the moment of truth. Judges Jonathan Antin, Kim Vo, and Tabatha Coffey go over each style. Jonathan is not blown away by Jon’s style, and Adee let the judges know that his model was uncooperative. Tabatha and Jonathan are clearly angry about Adee’s work, and they gave Janine and Brian the thumbs up for their work. Brig gave her model straight hair with three braids on one side, and is criticized for not trying to go for a more detailed style and is told by Tabatha that she gave up.

The top three are Jon, Janine and Brian, while Brig, Adee and Amy are at risk of being cut. Camila names Brian as the winner, and he has immunity from being eliminated next week. The dream of being Shear Genius on Bravois over, however, for Adee, and he is eliminated and sent packing back to England.

Stay tuned to see which of the next 7 will be eliminated!

Tabatha Coffey Breaks Down The Biggest Business Mistakes An Owner Can Make (February 19, 2012)

From gay bars to frozen yogurt shops, Tabatha Coffey‘s no-nonsense approach to business has saved a number of ventures on this season of her Bravo reality show. Through it all, the Tabatha Takes Over star has come to discover that there are four main blunders that business owners make, often resulting in the need for some tough love, Tabatha-style.

1. Dirt does hurt! “It’s the first thing that’s in your face,” Coffey explains to The Hollywood Reporter. “So, I look to see how cluttered it is, is it well kept, is it dirty, is there dust everywhere, hair all over the floor, is the place well-manicured and maintained. Because I think that says a lot about the pride that people take in the business.”

2. Be A Boss. One of the things Coffey has found missing in a lot of the businesses she visits is leadership. “Sometimes they check out, because they’ve never checked in,” Tabatha explains, “they don’t really know what they’re doing and they’ve never really checked in. Sometimes, they check out because everything gets so overwhelming. They don’t know how to deal with it, so they kind of check out of their business and they’re not really present in it — either physically or mentally — and then they’re not running it.”

3. Focus, Focus, Focus! “You need to have a good product,” says Tabatha Coffey. “I don’t care what business it is, you have to have a good product.”

3. Enfoque, Enfoque, Enfoque!

4. Face It With A Grin “Your attitude is really reflective, as well,” Tabatha adds. “Do you have a passion for it? Are you nice to people? It’s a customer service industry, you have to be nice to people. And it’s free. It’s easy to smile at someone, it’s easy to acknowledge them, it’s easy to ask how their day is. And that’s for any business.”

After three seasons of Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, it was obvious that Tabatha’s excellent management skills and business sense can easily translate to places outside of the beauty industry.

“It was such a natural progression, so many people said, ‘I wish you would come and take over and help us’ and we decided we would take over,” Tabatha Coffey told The Hollywood Reporter. “And I believe business principles are business principles, they follow through. And as a business owner, we all deal with the same set of problems in our business. So, it was a great transition to now move into other businesses not just hair dressing salons.”

For the talented hairstylist, the first three seasons weren’t just about helping others run their salons more efficiently.

“I like helping people,” she said. “It was exciting to be able to go in and challenge myself and also be able to help these other businesses. So, it was great.”

Though Tabatha will still take over a few hair salons throughout season four, Coffey will also take over a gay bar, a doggie daycare, a bed and breakfast, a frozen yogurt store and an entire beauty school. ”It’s Tabatha on steroids,” she said of the entire season.

Tonight, Tabatha takes over a hair salon called Jungle Red, whose owner has actually moved into the salon and passed all business authority on to her uninspired daughter.

“It was really the story, the story between mother and daughter,” Coffey reflected on the season’s first episode. “And, also, the fact that Suzanne put everything she had into the salon. And that’s why she was also staying there, which is the part that was really big for me.”

.
