A Midtown Minute with Tabatha Coffey

Last year, I had the pleasure of interviewing Bravo's Tabatha Coffey when she came to Midtown.

Tabatha, a professional stylist made famous for taking over hair salons on Tabatha's Salon Takeover signed her book, It's Not Really About the Hair, at Outwrite Bookstore, made an appearance at the W Midtown, and shaved heads at RiRa Irish Pub for St. Baldrick's, an organization that fights children's cancer.

When Tabatha called my cell, I wasn't sure to expect. OK I admit, I was even a little scared! But she couldn't have been nicer, even taking some extra time to answer questions from my blog's readers, like which flat iron is best.

Little did I know that while Tabatha was in town, she was also 'taking over' three different Georgia businesses, including Pat's Hair Shop in Douglasville that aired last week.

This season, Tabatha takes over other types of businesses as well. She's already made over a gay bar (her parents ran a strip club known for transsexual performers in Australia) and in a coming episode, she 'takes over' an Atlanta chiropractor's office.

One of my other favorite shows is Toddlers and Tiaras about child beauty pageants that often take place in Georgia and the South, so I asked Tabatha her thoughts on children that age being judged on their looks, including of course, their hair. I also asked what she thinks of big hair (her answer my surprise you!).

One of my biggest takeaways from the interview was when Tabatha told me that some salons are only expensive because of their location and real estate, not necessarily quality or service, and shared some tips for picking a quality stylist.

You can read my full interview with Tabatha Coffey including her tips and favorite Atlanta-area salons here.

My Oscar Picks: Tabatha Coffey

Tabatha Coffey is not known for mincing words. On “Tabatha Takes Over,” her Bravo reality television show, she holds nothing back as she tells the owners of small businesses exactly what they’re doing wrong, no matter what they might say to her.

“When you are a strong woman and you stand up for something you believe in and you speak your mind, you will get called a,” well, you can probaby guess the word she used. “No one knows what else to call you,” she added, speaking by phone from Los Angeles.

After getting her start as a hairstylist in her native Australia and going on to work in Britain and the United States, Ms. Coffey now aims her withering criticism at salons and, in the show’s latest season, other enterprises like yogurt shops and clubs. Yet the woman who is quick to describe her targets as revolting and unprofessional, was surprisingly positive about most of this year’s films. She loved the strong female characters in “The Help” and “Bridesmaids.” And as someone who repairs broken teams for a living, she admired the story of Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland A’s, in “Moneyball.”

“I liked how he sat down and looked at things on a different level and saw a way of fixing the team when everyone else was telling him he was an idiot and it would never work,” she said.

She filled out a ballot for us and spoke more about her choices and who she would like to put through one of her makeovers. Here are excerpts from the conversation:

Q. Do you see a lot of movies?
A. It’s really hard with my schedule, but I try to see them, especially the nominated ones. I’ll try to watch some movies on the plane. But I really do think it makes such a difference when you see these things in the theater. There’s nothing like seeing a movie on the big screen.

Q.You picked “The Artist” for three awards.
A.I thought it was amazing because “The Artist” brought silent movies to generations that might not be familiar with them. And actually got them, me included, to watch it. Though it had that old silent movie feel, it also felt fresh and modern. And that had to be a hard balance to strike between the two.

P. ¿Usted escogió "El Artista" para tres premios.

Q.Were you completely sold on Jean Dujardin for best actor as well?
A.It was a really tough category. I’m definitely no expert, but he did such an amazing job without even speaking. I think the actress category is going to be a really tough one as well.

Q.How did you decide on Meryl Streep?
A.It was a really hard choice. I wanted to pick two but I know that’s not how the game is played. Meryl Streep is just such a bloody amazing actress and it’s hard to find an actress who will make you forget who she truly is. But “The Help” was just such an amazing movie and the whole cast was really incredible. I would not be disappointed if Viola [Davis] won at all.

Q.It’s rare to see a movie with a large ensemble cast made up almost entirely of women. Was that significant to you?
A.I think it was. And on a lighter note, I think “Bridesmaids” was as well. You very rarely see a comedy-driven film for women. You always see these fluffy, romantic things. “Bridesmaids” was great because they were all such great comedians, so funny and so charming.

Q. Did the women in these films remind you of those of the women at the salons you fix up?
A. Absolutely. What woman hasn’t been through these things? And unfortunately, sometimes there is competiveness between women and they can be unsupportive of each other. In “Bridesmaids,” there was cattiness but you also saw the support system in the relationships the women had and how even if we come from different backgrounds, we have a way of understanding each other.

That’s true of “The Help” too. I just think we women have a way of working out our differences, more effectively than men do sometimes.

Q. Being a stylist, do you have a special affinity for the makeup and costume categories?
A. Absolutely. I’m fascinated with what the costume designers actually do and how they pull it together for a movie because they have so many people to dress and make it translatable to everyone. It’s a huge part of the story. [“Harry Potter”] did such a great job creatively with the makeup. It’s a really hard category and I actually think sometimes the makeup artists, costume designers and hairdressers don’t get enough props because people just take it for granted. They don’t realize how much work went into it.

Q. But you didn’t make a pick for costume design?
A. I didn’t? If its blank it’s probably because I was vacillating. But it would have to be between “Jane Eyre” and “Hugo.”

Q. Which film needs to undergo a Tabatha takeover?
A. This is going to be really hard because I adore [Charlize Theron], but “Young Adult.” I know its not nominated but that was rough to get through. I didn’t care for it at all. And I love her and think she’s such a great actress and she’s so much better than that movie was. I don’t mind if a movie is dark and depressing as long as there’s something you can glean from it. And I just found her character to be so annoying and pathetic and drivelly and just no kind of positive thing to it at all. That’s probably what they wanted, but I just wanted to turn it off.

Q. Do you come across a lot of people like that in your work?
A. Well, you meet a lot of people who want to recapture their past. That movie wasn’t really about trying to win the guy back, but about trying to recapture a time in her life when she was happy. And, yeah, I deal with that a lot, with people having to face where they are now as opposed to where they used to be or where they want to be.

Betch of the Week: Tabatha Coffey (13/1/2012)

This week we're celebrating a betch you wouldn't expect to see here, simply because she's like fucking old. But don't let her white hair and love of vagina dissuade you from seeing her for who she really is. She's a tall skinny bitch who's not afraid to tell people why they suck and this is the reason you, Tabatha Coffey, are Betch of the Week.

In my opinion is a pretty dreadful presentation, and more to present a business woman, hairdress of success and world fame as is Tabatha Coffey

Besides the obvious fact that her last name is the substance that runs in our veins, the betch literally and figuratively takes over any room she walks into. As it says in the title of her show, Tabatha literally takes over. She gets to tell exceptionally vapid people how to run their business, and then she revamps it. Tabatha's main thrill in life is a makeover, it gives her a sense of control in a world full of chaos.

And figuratively, because when she walks into a dirty ass salon that she's being paid bank to redesign, the morons she's about to tell off are not only scared shitless of her but also respect her. That's some serious Machiavellian shit right there. We're taking notes.

Estamos tomando notas.

The person who wrote this article is clear he wants to imitate the way of expressing Tabatha but the only thing it does is be rude and disrespectful not only to her but readers

We're not going to say shes the best looking lesbo to ever cross Andy Cohen's path, but we can definitely say that her accent makes up for her big ass fake lashes and that thing thats in front of her left eyebrow. I mean, she's a living fusion of Ja'mie and Mr.G. Can life possibly get more entertaining than that? When she says shit like "I wish I could slap that plastic surgery off her face" we're surprised that there are other people besides us who would actually say that out loud.

As Pisses me off. They say the big lesbian or famous Lesbian. A view has a name, is Tabatha Coffey, a business woman is not just a sexual orientation. If a handsome 10 dollares would not tell a great gay or gay famous but would say the impressive businessman who revolutionized the world. And to be clear that I am a man

To quote one of the nobel laureates she's had to work with on the show, "I really took what Tabatha said to heart, it was something like 'You're human... you're not the bomb.com'"

We know that Tabatha may not have the sweetest blood running through her body, as she hates children and is named after the witch in The Crucible, but we revere the various and creative ways she's brewed up, pun intended, to tell people to shut the fuck up and fuck off.

If that's a compliment .... I am a cyborg. I'm so disgusted, shocked and upset. If I were the editor would give him a kick in the ass fucking

Si eso es un cumplido.... Yo soy cyborg. Estoy tan asqueado, horrorizado y molesto.

Tabatha Take Over 5 "Chill"

Chill made some very common business mistakes -- no focus and no quality control. Sande had a love of frozen yogurt, but no knowledge of the product beyond the fact that she enjoyed eating it. When it didn't work, instead of focusing her business and making the product better, she just kept adding more and more products to try and increase revenue.

The other huge problem was Sande wasn't in her business as much as she needed to be. Thus the staff could do whatever they wanted because there were no rules or consequences. All of this needed to change.

The interesting thing for me was that Sande and her husband Jim had two successful businesses, but Chill was failing miserably and draining resources from the others that were doing well. The thing that made their other businesses successful was Jim and his daughter Shannon had experience in the businesses they were running. They were providing quality products and were hands on in their businesses -- the polar opposite of Chill.

After talking to the staff and tasting Shannon's food for myself, I knew firsthand she made quality products, cared about what she made, and was a huge asset. The frozen yogurt certainly wasn't working, but introducing fresh, homemade, delicious products would, and I hoped that Sande would agree.

I was surprised by how excited the staff was when they found out Chill was doing away with yogurt and becoming a coffee shop, which would offer fresh sandwiches and baked goods. It was actually more work for them, but they were all on board, and the best news was that Sande was too.

I was so happy when I went back to check on everyone at Chill. Not only had Sande stepped up, so had Lauren the manager. The staff was respecting both Lauren and Beth, and they were really doing a great job.

I have an update on Chill -- Sande and Jim have decided to expand on my recommendations and turn it into a bakery. Shannon is a trained pastry chef and is going to be making all the baked goods. I am so excited and happy for them all, and I know that it's going to be a success.

Bravo TV

The prospect of Tabatha taking over a fro-yo shop was honestly terrifying, mostly because soft serve machines require so much upkeep and daily maintenance. If the store was lax about cleaning them, it would be a recipe for a stomach ache disaster. Although no one was visibly ill, the sub-par yogurt led to one of the biggest takeover transformations Tabatha has ever pulled off.

Really?! Moment No. 3 - Fancy Footwork

The staff at Chill wasn't exactly very professional. But you know things have gone too far when one of the employees drops a drink, curses in front of customers, and then proceeds to clean up the spill by throwing a towel on it and mopping it up with her bare feet. Yes, you read that correctly, with her bare feet. Now I don't claim to be an expert on the food service industry, but I'm fairly certain that's not the proper, hygienic way to clean up a spill.

Really?! Moment No. 2 - Child's Play

I will admit, open, buffet-style set-ups often freak me out a little bit. I'd much prefer to wait a bit and have things served to me from behind a glass partition, as fun as the prospect of making your own sundae might be. And the reason is this -- people touching things. Especially kids. Watching that little girl finger through all the toppings gave me the heebie jeebies. First of all, why was the mother allowing her to do this!? Not cool, mom. And come on, managers! You may not want to yell at your friends, but why not stop this girl from getting all up on your products?

Really?! Moment No. 1 - Fro-Yo-Phile

So Sande likes frozen yogurt. Scratch that, Sande loves frozen yogurt. That's all she seems to be able to communicate to Tabatha. However what Sande does not seem to realize is that loving to eat frozen yogurt does not automatically make you a savvy fro-you shop owner. I also don't understand how she thought her yogurt tasted good if she's such a connoisseur of yogurt. Was she simply blinded by that fact that it was her own? Had her palette become that desensitized?

Somehow Tabatha managed to convinced the frozen yogurt obsessed owner to drop the fro-yo entirely and stick to what they do well -- coffee. Thus we have a 'Takeover' first -- Tabatha transforming the business itself.

NYP: What’s the dopiest small business you ran across?

TC: It was a frozen-yogurt shop. They were confused and lacked focus on what they really were. They sold frozen yogurt but they also sold coffee and these terrible packaged sandwiches. They just had so many things going on that it didn’t have any focus, so as a customer walking in you didn’t know what the hell it was.

3 - how pairs of boots have high heels, shoes, too? intrigue as you can walk without falling. Why do not you take it only 1 h also 8 h or more? When you get home you end up with feet pain?

NYP: What’s the most impor-tant trait an entrepreneur needs to succeed?

TC: The number one thing is passion. That drive will get you up every morning and make sure that everything is running well. And you have to be present in your business. A lot of businesses are failing because people are not present. They expect everyone else to do the work for them and to take care of the business and do the right thing. Are people making sure the product is sold properly? Are people making sure customers are being treated properly?

You have to be willing, especially in a small business, to put the time in and the energy in.
