Tabatha Coffey is someone who does not let anyone or anything stand in her way. The beautician, educator, and star of Bravo's hit series "Tabatha's Salon Takeover," as well as her ten year relationship with her partner (who has yet to be revealed) are a testament of her strong work ethic. All this, despite growing up as an obese child, being bullied, and loosing her mother to cancer. Tabatha has made a name of herself internationally, slimmed down, and is happy to call New Jersey her home for the past sixteen years. She revealed her strengths in a recent interview

You have been working at your craft since you were a mere fourteen years old. What inspired you to want to become a part of the hair and beauty industry?

Tabatha CoffeyHonestly, growing up in my parents' clubs I loved fitting the wigs to the drag queens'  heads and helping to transform them. I love makeup, I adore fashion, but hair is what I loved more than anything.

As an openly-gay beautician and entrepreneur, do you feel that you faced more challenges making a name for yourself within the industry?

No not at all. I don't introduce myself as "Tabatha the Lesbian." If people ask me questions about my orientation, I will discuss it, but I think my talent along with the amount of time I put into the industry is what makes me who I am. Not my sexuality.
 
Como un esteticista abiertamente gay y empresario, ¿cree usted que le enfrentó más desafíos haciendo un nombre por sí mismo dentro de la industria?

You have been with your partner for over ten years now. What advice to do have for our readers in terms of managing both a career and a relationship?

It is extremely difficult. It comes down to a communal balance and a give and take of compromise. I am lucky to be with someone who is very supportive of me and what I do. She understands who I am, she comprehends my work ethic, and is content with the amount of time I have to devote to my work.

Es extremadamente difícil. Todo se reduce a un equilibrio comunal y un toma y daca de compromiso. Tengo la suerte de estar con alguien que es un gran apoyo para mí y lo que hago. Gay men are often typecast as not being able to handle a long-term relationship. If same sex marriage were legalized do you feel that the community would, as a whole, take commitment more seriously?

I really do. We have all heard the joke, "one date is enough and they don't want another one." We should all be given the right to live freely with our partner, have children, and be able to own property together. There is promiscuity in the heterosexual world; the gay community doesn't own the right. There are many gay couples that have lived successfully who are simply not put in the spotlight. I know many gay couples that have been together longer than I have been with my own partner.

Los hombres homosexuales suelen encasillar como no ser capaz de manejar una relación a largo plazo. Si el matrimonio del mismo sexo fueron legalizados se siente que la comunidad, como un todo, tomar más en serio el compromiso?

What message would you like to relay specifically to teens and young adults who are confused and trying to come to terms with who they are?

I truly believe that coming out and coming to terms with our sexuality, although we get to the same result, we deal with it all differently. You have to be strong and understand that being gay or a lesbian doesn't make you a freak; you do not deserve to be bullied, harassed, or deemed second best. The first step in achieving happiness is believing in yourself, which is difficult at first because people universally give you a hard time in the beginning, but once you move past that everything spirals upward.

¿Qué mensaje le gustaría relé específicamente a los adolescentes y adultos jóvenes que están confundidos y tratando de llegar a un acuerdo con lo que son?
Sinceramente, creo que salir y hacer las paces con nuestra sexualidad, a pesar de que llegamos al mismo resultado, nos ocupamos de todo de manera diferente. Tienes que ser fuerte y entender que ser gay o lesbiana no te convierte en un monstruo, tú no mereces ser intimidados, acosados, o se considera el segundo mejor. El primer paso para lograr la felicidad es creer en ti mismo, que es difícil al principio porque la gente universalmente le dará un tiempo difícil al principio, pero una vez que dejar atrás todo lo que sube en espiral hacia arriba.

Having grown up in Australia and traveled the world, what are your thoughts on the Garden State? Give us the good, the bad, and the ugly!

Moving to New Jersey was a shock; I came from living in a city (London) to a suburb and was viewed as a "freak." Many people had a hard time with me when I moved here but I have lived here for sixteen years straight. I like the state and I feel we get a bad rap because people see the not-so-attractive parts a lot more than they see the beautiful areas. We are in close proximity of New York and can take advantage of what the city has to offer yet still come home to a spacious environment.

Habiendo crecido en Australia y viajó por el mundo, ¿cuáles son sus pensamientos sobre el estado del jardín? Danos lo bueno, lo malo y lo feo!
Mudarse a Nueva Jersey fue un shock, yo venía de vivir en una ciudad (Londres) a un suburbio y era visto como un "freak". Mucha gente tenía un rato duro conmigo cuando me mudé aquí, pero he vivido aquí durante dieciséis años consecutivos. Me gusta el estado y siento que tienen una mala reputación porque la gente ve las partes no tan atractivas mucho más de lo que ve las hermosas áreas. This season of your Bravo series, "Tabatha's Salon Takeover," seems to be a lot more emotional than your two previous seasons. How would you say your experience in season three is as opposed to the other two seasons?

Like most programs, I feel that we have evolved. When you own a business your life and your business become very much intertwined, and while these salons have had legitimate financial problems, they all stem from emotional issues their owners were dealing with.

What are some tips and advice you have for salon owners in terms of achieving success and maintaining it?

The first tip is maintaining education. You never stop learning. This is an industry that is always evolving, whether it be trends or products, this is an industry that changes incredibly fast. There is always a bigger or better style or product on the market, and you always have to be on top of it or you will get left behind. Secondly, one must not confuse an intimate relationship with a client with a friend. Just because a client opens up to you, does not give you reason to behave unprofessionally in front of them or to adhere to their needs less.

¿Cuáles son algunos consejos y sugerencias que tenga para los propietarios de salones en términos de alcanzar el éxito y mantenerlo?
El primer consejo es mantener la educación. Nunca se deja de aprender. Esta es una industria que está en constante evolución, ya sea en las tendencias o productos, esta es una industria que cambia muy rápido. Siempre hay un estilo más grande o mejor o producto en el mercado, y siempre tienes que estar encima de ella o se le quedan atrás. En segundo lugar, no hay que confundir una relación íntima con un cliente con un amigo. El hecho de que un cliente se abre a ti, no te da motivos para comportarse poco profesional frente a ellos o se adhieran a sus necesidades menos.

What are some hair styles and color concepts that we are going to be seeing on men and women this year?

The market is very celebrity driven right now. Clients are often coming in with photographs of how a celebrity wore their hair on the red carpet. I recommend a drastic change. For example, if you have had long hair sometimes it helps to cut it off or to dye your hair a dramatic color. This shows versatility and teaches us that hair can be played with.

 Tabatha Coffey, star of Bravo's hit TV series, Tabatha's Salon Takeover, visited my school on Tuesday. It was quite an experience. While I've always been interested in all things hairstyling, some of the terminology and logistics of running a salon went right over my head; I had tuned into Tabatha's Salon Takeover every once in a while before beginning my schooling at Paul Mitchell, but was never a consistent viewer. Once I heard Tabatha was coming to speak at my school I began recording every episode that aired in attempts to learn as much as I possibly could about her craft before meeting her in person.

Tabatha Coffey, protagonista de la exitosa serie de televisión Bravo, Tabatha Salon Takeover, visitó mi escuela el martes. Fue toda una experiencia. Aunque siempre he estado interesado en todo peluquería cosas, parte de la terminología y la logística de funcionamiento de un salón de belleza fue a la derecha por encima de mi cabeza, me había sintonizado Salon Takeover Tabatha cada de vez en cuando antes de comenzar mis estudios en Paul Mitchell, pero fue nunca un visor consistente. During that time I was still in the "core" phase of my schooling (which means I wasn't out on the floor assisting or taking clients myself). I found it really helpful by watching the show because it gave me real insight into what working in a salon was like. The recommendations she made for the salons she visited gave me a better idea of what works, and what doesn't work. About a week before she came to speak at Paul Mitchell I got It's Not Really About the Hair, the book that she wrote to share her experiences and encourage her fans to embrace who they really are. I read the book cover-to-cover in 2 days. This got me all the more excited to see her speak in person.

It was truly a blessing to learn from Tabatha because she taught me some very important life lessons; ones that you learn not just through the good times, but the bad times as well. I'll share some of them with you.

Durante ese tiempo yo todavía estaba en el "núcleo" fase de mis estudios (lo que significa que no estaba en el suelo o ayudar a llevar a los clientes a mí mismo). Me pareció muy útil por ver el espectáculo, porque me dio una visión real de lo que es trabajar en un salón como era. Las recomendaciones que hizo para los salones que visitamos me dio una mejor idea de lo que funciona y qué no funciona. Alrededor de una semana antes de que viniera a hablar en Paul Mitchell tengo en realidad no es sobre el pelo, el libro que ella escribió para compartir sus experiencias y animar a sus seguidores a abrazar lo que realmente son. Leí la portada a portada libro en 2 días. Esto me tiene todo el emocionado más que ver su hablar en persona.

1. If you really want it, you can get it.

Tabatha inspired me to take matters into my own hands and go out and get what I want. When she moved from London to New Jersey, she took the initiative to make herself known by passing out business cards and offering free hair cuts. She thought outside of the box and propelled herself into the spotlight. It was not luck that got her to where she is today but her determination, resiliency, and willingness to do what others weren't willing to do that brought her success.

1. Si realmente lo quieres, lo puedes conseguir.
Tabatha me inspiró a tomar el asunto en mis propias manos y salir y conseguir lo que quiero. Cuando se mudó de Londres a Nueva Jersey, tomó la iniciativa de hacerse conocido por repartir tarjetas de visita y ofrecer cortes sin pelo. 2. Embrace who you truly are.

Tabatha is one of the few people in the world that sticks to her guns and doesn't cater to society's expectations. She embraces who she is using her intuition to guide her decisions. New opportunities came her way because she was not afraid to take risks. Sporting a shaved head, Tabatha stood out from the average New Jersey stylist. She embraced who she was because she was confident in her skills and ability to do great hair. She didn't compromise who she is to fit in and that it something I respect and admire about Tabatha Coffey.
2. Abraza lo que realmente son.
Tabatha es una de las pocas personas en el mundo que se pega a sus armas y no atender a las expectativas de la sociedad. Abraza que ella está utilizando su intuición para guiar sus decisiones. 3. Don't sell yourself short.

Unlike many other stylists who will discount their prices and advertise 1/2 off deals, Tabatha preaches to value your services and your profession by holding yourself to a higher standard. She teaches stylists the importance of periodically raising prices and giving a quality experience to the guest while they are in your chair. She used an example of how friends and family members often want to take advantage of you by asking for free services simply because of the relationship you have with them. She told us to honor ourselves and our profession through willingness to say no, and asserting appropriate boundaries between your work and your personal life. I found this to be profound because I believe it may be the cause of burnout for many stylists. She advised us to value our work by holding ourselves accountable and using our skills as a salon professional, not a personal favor to others.

All in all I learned a great deal from Tabatha and am so very grateful to those at PMTS-Chicago that raised the funds to get her as a guest speaker!

3. No se quede corto.
A diferencia de muchos otros estilistas que le descuenten sus precios y publicidad 1/2 ofertas de descuento, predica a Tabatha valoran sus servicios y su profesión mediante la celebración de sí mismo a un nivel superior. Ella enseña la importancia de los estilistas periódicamente subir los precios y dar un servicio de calidad a los huéspedes mientras se encuentren en su silla. Ella usó un ejemplo de cómo los amigos y familiares a menudo quieren aprovecharse de usted pidiendo servicios gratuitos, simplemente por la relación que tiene con ellos. Ella nos dijo que respetarnos a nosotros mismos y de nuestra profesión a través de la voluntad de decir no, y hacer valer los límites apropiados entre su trabajo y su vida personal. In the past several years, with any conversation involving hair, the name "Tabatha" is bound to be uttered. Reality show host Tabatha Coffey recently sat down to speak about her past Down Under, what celebrities hair she is loving right now, and what's next for her.

Tabatha, thanks for taking the time to speak with me! So you were born in Australia (Surfers Paradise, Queensland to be exact), did three years of training in London, and now you have set up shop in New Jersey (Tabatha owns and operates Industrie Hair Gurus in Ridgewood, N.J.). How did an "Aussie" end up in  New Jersey?

After being in London for work, I found that I absolutely loved it there first.  I came to Jersey as I had family here, and ended up staying!

Many fans originally discovered you on the BRAVO reality competition show "Shear Genius". Was it hard cutting hair in a competition setting?

Cutting hair under that much pressure was extremely hard. I mean, you always will feel pressure from clients, but this was a different kind of pressure altogether. Also, living in a house with the other contestants took me totally out of my comfort zone. Not only is there stress to win the competition, but there is added stress from the living situation; most of the stress though, came from me being out of my natural environment.

Muchos fans que descubrió originalmente en el programa concurso BRAVO realidad "Shear Genius". ¿Fue difícil cortar el pelo en un entorno de competencia?

Cortar el pelo bajo tanta presión era muy duro. Quiero decir, que siempre se siente la presión de los clientes, pero se trataba de una especie diferente de la presión total. Además, vivir en una casa con los demás concursantes me tomó totalmente fuera de mi zona de confort. No sólo hay tensión en ganar la competencia, pero se le añade el estrés de la situación de vida, la mayor parte de la tensión, sin embargo, vino de mí está fuera de mi entorno natural.
 

"Tabatha's Salon Takeover" has become a huge Bravo hit. What things do you try to change the most at the salons you visit?

It really does vary from salon to salon, as the problems are very different at each one. For example, if the management is just falling short, they may just need a "shake-up" of sorts and not a full-on makeover. I really look at the basics-is the salon clean? How is the customer service? For example, if a salon is dirty, that shows a lack of care completely. I talk to the owners, talk to the staff, make sure I get both sides. Then I make my decisions.

"Adquisición de Tabatha Salon" se ha convertido en un enorme éxito de Bravo. ¿Qué cosas se intenta cambiar la mayoría en los salones que visita?
 Realmente varía de salón en salón, ya que los problemas son muy diferentes en cada uno. The boys of New Jersey have adopted you as our "high priestess of hair", especially since your business is located right here in the Garden State! Do you ever venture out to take in any of the gay culture of New Jersey?

I don't really go out that much anymore, I'm so busy! I work all day, go home, relax, then get up and start all over again. I may go out after an event sometimes though, I mean I do love the boys! Tabatha Coffey

What hair trends are out right now that you are absolutely loving?

One of the biggest celebrity-driven trends that I am noticing right now is the fact that several celebrities have completely changed their looks. For example, Emma Watson ("Hermione" of the Harry Potter franchise) looks stunning with her new haircut, somewhat of a modern-day Audrey Hepburn. Jessica Biel has also just gone darker, which I am loving!

Una de las principales tendencias impulsadas por las celebridades que estoy notando en este momento es el hecho de que varias celebridades han cambiado por completo su apariencia. Any time a celebrity makes a drastic color or cut change, I think it's great, it makes every day people see that they may be able to make a change as well.

You have your own show on BRAVO, so what is next for Tabatha Coffey? A product line maybe?

I have a book coming out January 25th, 2011 titled “It’s Not Really About The Hair,” which is a memoir of life lessons. Basically, these are all stories of my life; be yourself no matter what, stand up for yourself, those kind of things. In light of the bullying problems recently, my memoir is timely to say the least.
