Jerry Nunn, interview to Tabatha Coffey

Australian hairstylist Tabatha Coffey has been reinventing businesses across the country on Bravo and is finishing up her hit show Tabatha Takes Over for another season.

We chatted on the phone about the new season of her show before it began.

JN: This season looks as gay as ever with a drag queen playing you on one episode. Where was that?

TC: Oh, it was fabulous. It was here in California in Riverside at a nightclub that I took over. Morgan McMichaels is actually a friend of mine as well. Now I know where I can turn if I ever get sick or need a day off, Morgan’s my girl because she is fabulous at being me.

JN: I liked Morgan on RuPaul’s Drag Race. You went to my hometown Nashville this season.

TC: We had some great businesses there that did need help. For me personally, it was the first time that I’ve spent actually any time in Nashville at all. I had been to Tennessee but not to Nashville.

So it was really great to be able spend some time there even though I’m working and really get to know the state, the city and a lot of the people that live there from the businesses I took over.

JN: How did it go there?

TC: Well you do have to watch what happens but you know what, there were really interesting sets of business problems. On the premier episode you’ll actually see a business that I took over in East Nashville, which is an up and coming area.

It’s definitely changed from when the business owner first opened her business there. The area is growing around her quickly. She obviously wants to help save her business and grow with the times and really keep up to date with the area is changing.

And that was one of her, amongst other things, one of her business problems was how she could do that and diversify her business more. I go to a great barber shop outside of Nashville that was really exciting for me.

It was the first barbershop I took over. I’ve always wanted to take over a barber shop so that was really fun and definitely you’ll see some butting of heads there. The owner was a little stubborn and a little hard to get through to.

The thing that was great is spending a lot of time there but you’ll see four very distinctively different businesses with very different business problems.

JN: How did that barbershop work out for you?

TC: Well going to a barbershop especially something that is more of a traditional barbershop and they really wanted to elevate themselves, barber shops are really hot at the moment. You see a lot of them popping up all over the place.

Guys want to pamper themselves as well and one of the biggest differences between a barbershop and a hairdressing salon obviously is the role of the model of that business.

Barbershops are typically in and out of the chair within 15 or 20 minutes. It’s a high volume turnover. A lot of barbers don’t realize that they can put additional services on there. They can take time with the haircut.

That’s really what guys today want to do as well. So they were a stubborn group. They were very hard to get through to. There was a lot of testosterone in the room.

TC: it was exciting to me because I love the skill of barbering. I think it’s an amazing craft and I was really happy to be able to go into a barbershop and help them get their business back on track.

JN: Are there new hair trends or celebrity hairstyles that you are into?

TC: I actually thought it was a really good red carpet year for me. I do fashion critiques and things for awards season and I thought that a lot more people got it right this season than in past seasons so that’s really good news.

I will say that I’m glad that ombre is on the way out. I think that we’re all tired of the ombre color effect. It’s spring so we’re going to see people going lighter.

Red is really hot at the moment, different shades of red depending on what your skin tone can wear and how bright you actually want to take it. That’s always fun. I’m really actually enjoying the fact that fringes are really in at the moment as well.

I think it’s a great way for people to change their look instantly and also that we’re seeing shorter hair.

JN: What do you think of Michelle Obama’s?

TC: I think it’s fantastic that she did it and she looks amazing. Good for her.

JN: Was there ever a problem that was too big to fix in one week?

TC: You know what? Often yes, from this season and from previous seasons. When you actually get in there and I start asking questions we start finding out and more issues keep coming up.

It can seem insurmountable sometimes the pressure that everyone’s under, especially when I come up with a really resistant owner and they truly just don’t want to change. And it’s a limited window to try and get through to them.

That’s why you see me be tough and you see me use some of the tactics that I use to really get my point across and get them to realize how dire the situation is.

The thing with me though is once I’ve committed to taking over I will do everything I can in my power to do the best of my ability to get through to everyone and whip them into shape and turn things around.

Then after my week is done it’s up to them to follow through and make sure that they keep implementing those changes so that they can keep growing and not going back to their old ways.

 JN: We always see you wear the color black on the show. Will that continue this season?
TC: You’ll see more black. Honestly I love fashion. I’m totally addicted to it. I love clothes. I love anything fashion related. And I try and get clothes that are really easy to wear with other things.

So everything has to be mix and match for me. It has to be really comfortable because I am working so I need things to be comfortable and they’re clothes that I can do hair in and work in, those kinds of things.

I’m known for my ridiculous heels because I love really high heels. So you’ll see more of those. Probably pretty standard Tabatha, I wear a lot of jackets.

I don’t wear a lot of skirts because they’re not the most comfortable things, especially when I’m running around the salon or a business looking for dirt and bending over and doing hair. So you’ll see lots of skinny pants and lots of jackets and maybe a couple of other things.

JN: How many salon owners have called you the B word?

TC: I can tell you that I wish I had a nickel for every time because I could go and lay on the beach somewhere and have a little vacation and a Mai Tai. A lot. I joke about it now. I wrote about it in my book.

As most people know, I took back and reclaimed the word bitch because I got sick of people using it in the negative connotation and I came up with my own acronym which is Brave, Intelligent, Tenacious, Creative and Honest.

It’s a word that’s used for women when a woman is strong and forthright and honest and people don’t know what else to say except the B word. And it’s said a lot.

I think people are getting to know me a little bit more now and realizing that when I do say things that it is in the vein to help people and to help these businesses or help individuals grow and be better, not in a mean spirited way.

JN: What was the most difficult salon to take over this season?
TC: Wow. Honestly there were a lot. It’s always really hard for me to say the most difficult because when I’m in that moment and when I first take over that business I’m so consumed with being where I am that I don’t think about anything that I have done before that point.

When I’m finished with the season and taking over the 12 businesses that I take over, I just sit and think about all of them and hope that they’re all doing well and they’re all following through and everything is okay.

I really encountered a lot of very, very stubborn, hardheaded people which I can appreciate because I can be that as well.

When you’re trying to get through to them and trying to show them different ways of doing things or make them understand some of the problems that they’re encountering in their business, it can be incredibly frustrating. So you’ll see a lot of frustrated Tabatha this season.

JN: It is always great to see you take over a variety of businesses.
TC: We expanded from just taking over beauty salons into small businesses and we continue to do that with season five. You will see a mixture of half hair salons and then non hair salons.
